The quality of education in Egypt remains a major challenge preventing children from developing to their full potential and contributing to society in the long term.
The main reason is the lack of educational facilities and the high tuition fees of private schools. These costs are unaffordable to the average citizen with their limited income, which piles on pressure on public schools, leading to an increased density.
According to a recent study by Abdel Khalek and Langsten (2019) and the World Bank (2019) report "understanding poverty and inequality in Egypt), young people from the wealthiest families are significantly more likely than young people from families in the poorest quintile to have gone to higher education in Egypt. Only 15% of poor families in Egypt have their children enter higher education. Moreover females, and rural residents are significantly less likely to enter higher education than males, and people from urban or slum areas.
According to another study by the Arab Journal of Administration, only 17.6% of university enrolled students are in STEM (science, technology, engineering, and math) specializations. And as mentioned before, the poor cannot afford university education, and especially STEM education that is known for elevated costs; given the need to pay for scientific materials, tools, and references. For that reason, scholarships are needed to support low income youth to access STEM education (Egypt Human Development Report, 2021).
Unfortunately, even the students who manage to graduate from a SAFE specializations have high unemployment rates as they constitute nearly half of the unemployed as they lack high qualification or competencies to excel in the market.
